some current insight into our country's racial relationships. Let's be smart and take some
time to learn about each other, learn which policies work and which policies don't.

Equity is the fair and just allocation of resources, access, and opportunities in such a way that all persons have what they need to succeed, grow, contribute and be represented in all parts of society. Equity refers not to providing identical resources to everyone but to distributing resources and opportunities based on each person’s needs.
Inclusion is the intentional, ongoing effort to ensure that diverse individuals have equitable access and involvement in community and decision-making. As an action, inclusion entails welcoming, supporting, respecting, and valuing diverse individuals and groups for their unique contributions and perspectives, while ensuring none are excluded from presence, belonging, and participation with dignity".

For instance, a study by the Harvard Business Review found that many DEI initiatives fail to consider the importance of individual merit and performance, leading to potential resentment and division within organizations".

Some of the Pitfalls of DEI
Vice President Kamala Harris on Antisemitic Protests on University Campuses:

They are showing exactly what the human emotion should be, as a response to Gaza,' the vice president said in an excerpt of the interview released Monday. 'There are things some of the protesters are saying that I absolutely reject, so I don’t mean to wholesale endorse their points.
But we have to navigate it. I understand the emotion behind it.'
Protesters have wreaked havoc on college campuses for months, calling for the elimination of Israel, defending Hamas’s Oct. 7 terrorist attack on Israel, and assaulting Jewish students.
In April, pro-Palestinian protesters at Yale stabbed a Jewish student in the eye. Agitators at UCLA spewed death threats at Jewish students and a campus rabbi in June. And Columbia University has been rife with anti-Semitic vitriol for months, with students chanting, 'There is only one solution, intifada revolution.' The widespread violence and anti-Semitic rhetoric has led to a congressional investigation of multiple universities".

While recognizing the evolving and malleable nature of CRT, scholar Khiara Bridges outlines a few key tenets of CRT, including:
"Critics of the theory claim it shames and guilts children based on their race
'We should not teach that one race is superior to another,' said Texas Republican state House Rep. Steve Toth in an interview with ABC News. 'We should not teach that one race is inferior to another'."

"People who see themselves as victims may struggle with self-confidence and self-esteem. This can make feelings of victimization worse.
They might think things like, "I’m not smart enough to get a better job” or “I’m not talented enough to succeed.” This perspective may keep them from trying to develop their skills or identify new strengths and abilities that could help them achieve their goals.
Those who do try to work toward what they want and fail may see themselves as the victim of circumstances once again. The negative lens they view themselves with can make it difficult to see any other possibility".

Poverty affects a child’s brain development, inhibiting their ability to learn and understand. "Los Angeles, Santa Ana, Oakland Unified, Sacramento City Unified and other California districts have decided to limit the use of 'Ds' and phased out 'Fs' in grading. High schoolers who fail a test or homework assignment can get a do-over or more time to complete the work.
Students who don’t ever finish the assignments or who fail the final exam would earn an 'incomplete', according to EdSource".
"Sunrise Park Middle School in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, near St. Paul, will no longer hand out 'F' grades to students who turn in the lowest quality work. The new grading system will no longer reflect student behavior or tardiness, or whether an assignment was completed on time. Grading, the school’s website reads, perpetuates systemic racism."

"Typically, a student who finishes zero schoolwork should expect zero for a grade. But that is not the case anymore in Kansas City Public Schools.
For the 2023-24 school year, the school district district launched a new grading system, the 'no zero policy.' Essentially, the minimum grade on any given assignment is 40%, even if the student didn’t do the assignment. The policy is designed to help struggling students catch up.
These changes intend to reduce the adverse effects of zeroes on students’ grades, emphasizing growth and progress support and intervention and authentic learning and equity,' Franklin said in the video statement".

" The average test scores for U.S. 13-year-olds have dipped in reading and dropped sharply in math since 2020, according to new data from National Assessment of Educational Progress.
The average scores, from tests given last fall, declined 4 points in reading and 9 points in math, compared with tests given in the 2019-2020 school year, and are the lowest in decades. The declines in reading were more pronounced for lower performing students, but dropped across all percentiles.
The math scores were even more disappointing. On a scale of 500 points, the declines ranged from 6 to 8 points for middle and high performing students, to 12 to 14 points for low performing students".
A new working paper from Brown University titled 'The Unintended Consequences of Academic Leniency' digs into these questions by looking at what happened when a state, North Carolina, lowered its standards.
The new, laxer standards allowed the lower-performing students to increasingly disengage from school and fall further behind their peers. Worse, these effects compounded over time, and the more lenient grading standards eventually led to lower ACT scores for the students who came in the furthest behind".
